Hi, I’m Julene Andrews
I founded Designing Healthy Lifestyles out of a love for nutrition and fitness and a passion to educate, empower, and support others on their journey to a happier and healthier life.
I have spent many years studying nutrition and prevention of cancer and other chronic diseases.
I have learned firsthand how cancer does not discriminate, it can happen to anyone.
One of my major lifetime accomplishments was competing at Ironman Arizona in November, 2010 where my husband, Steve and I crossed the finish line together, hand in hand!
Within months, I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of uterine cancer. My treatment consisted of surgery and four months of chemotherapy. I continued to train during my treatment and I completed Ironman Canada six months later.
While in Canada, Steve noticed a nagging stomach ache. Within weeks of returning home, he was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach/esophageal cancer and told he had less than a year to live.
We were 49 and 51 when diagnosed with cancer. We were in the best shape of our lives, exercising daily and living a very healthy lifestyle, so we thought.
I started to question the diet we were eating and dove into the field of health and wellness to learn everything I possibly could about reversing and preventing disease with diet and lifestyle changes.
What I learned absolutely shocked me.
I learned that the Standard American Diet (SAD, yes it is!) is the root of most chronic disease in our country, and in other countries too as they adopt our American way of eating.
We are seeing and hearing more of our loved ones and neighbors being diagnosed with this epidemic of diseases – cancer, heart condition, diabetes, asthma, arthritis and auto immune diseases to name a few – mostly all diet related, and preventable.
This is what has driven me to be a Health Coach.
I want to make others aware that the choices they make on a daily basis have a major impact on their future health.
My family has made big changes to the way that we eat and I have now been cancer free for over 5 years. Steve spent another two years swimming, biking, running and traveling after his diagnosis before losing his battle to cancer. He was an inspiration to many and I hope that his story will encourage others to make positive lifestyle changes.
I treat each new day as a new opportunity to fill my body with great nutrition.
I am often asked if I am a vegetarian, vegan, paleo, or what dietary theory I have adopted.
My answer, “I’m a Nutritarian!” I strive to eat a diet high in nutrients! By eating a wide variety of different whole foods, primarily plant based, I get the most micronutrients per calorie. I try to make nutrition easy by eating a rainbow of different foods every day!
I am excited to share my knowledge with you and would love to help you incorporate nutrition and fitness into your life!
I received my training from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, where I was trained in more than one hundred different dietary theories and have studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods.
Prior to my studies at Integrative Nutrition, I studied at the T. Colin Campbell Foundation through eCornell where I earned a Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition.
Drawing upon this knowledge, I will help you create a completely personalized “road map to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals.
